DAY IN THE LIFE PHOTO SLIDESHOW

COLD WATER DIVING AT ITS BEST
Where Underwater Image-Makers Converge to Compete and Learn

The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society (NCUPS) and Backscatter have partnered each year to showcase Monterey diving with The Monterey Shootout. While most put an emphasis on the competition, which was expanded to 36 hours this year, there is also a learning component to this fun-filled weekend. We were honored to have Mike Bartick (who traveled from all the way from Anilao Philippines), a marine wildlife pro photographer, kick off our Sunday seminars. Sharing his techniques on strobe angles, compositions and capturing animal behaviors, Mike's seminar planted another seed of macro shooting excitement in the audience. Continuing the Sunday education series, renowned photo pro, Richard Salas, took to the podium to encourage shooters to lose the fear of backscatter in their images by moving those strobes around. This fresh perspective was widely received from the crowd, who were anxious to stop doing what they're told, and ready to give it a try on the next dive!

CONTEST
The Goal is Point Accumulation

The Monterey Shootout is a 36 hour competition for underwater photographers and videographers of all skill levels to dive, shoot, edit and enter their images into the competition for some pretty awesome prizes. While cold-water diving is not for the feint of heart, the strict time table adds another level of challenges and complexity to this unique event. Based on a point-awarding system that spans across all skill levels, the winners can choose their one favorite prize from the pool of exotic trips, underwater photo gear or dive accessories. This year again proved that it's not just the advanced shooters who sweep the contest categories, as a newer shooter racked up the points across several photo categories, enabling him to be the top prize winner! And as Berkley White says, "We are all winners, some of us are just prize challenged!". Congratulations to all who participated in the 2015 Monterey Shootout!

This years photo judges were Chuck DavisScott Campbell and Jim Decker, with Berkley White presiding over all judging. Judging is no easy task, especially when there's a lot of great imagery to pick from. Sometimes the judges are in complete, copacetic agreement. Other times, judging can escalate from arguing for their favorite to making another see reason! All-in-all, the photo judges honed their picks down to the finalists from over 300 submissions. In the video judging room, Joel PennerDan Baron, Rusty Sanoian and Jeff Honda deliberated the merits of their favorite montage, even arguing the smallest details. Sticking to their guns and unable to come to a majority, the photo judges were brought in to give their opinions to determine 1st place vs 2nd place. At the Monterey Shootout, we take judging seriously!
