The 2026 Monterey Shootout marked one of the largest competitions in the event’s history, bringing together more than 190 dedicated underwater photographers and a record number of exceptional submissions across every category. Competitors traveled from around the world for the opportunity to dive the iconic waters of Monterey Bay and compete for over $53,000 in prizes.
This year’s entries highlighted the incredible diversity of Monterey Bay’s underwater world. Lush kelp forests, playful sea lions, and creative uses of motion blur were recurring themes throughout the competition, while photographers also captured the remarkable variety of marine life and unique subjects that make Monterey Bay one of the world’s premier diving destinations.

After an action-packed 36 hours of diving, shooting, and editing, it’s time to celebrate the community that makes the Monterey Shootout special. The annual party at Backscatter brings everyone together to share stories from the weekend, relive memorable dives, reconnect with old friends, and make new ones, all while enjoying great food, drinks, and a well-earned chance to unwind.
